First Post

I was talking on the phone with my father the other day. He was talking about retirement and indicated that he ought to be saving up in case he needs to go into a nursing home. I balked at such a notion while simultaneously realizing that we had never talked about what he might do as old age sets in. I had just assumed he would move in with us, but I hadn't considered what that might look like. It was then that we began to dream of living on a farm and him helping to raise our children. It was from this personal desire, to unite my family and live closer to the earth that my wife and I started hatching a plan that went beyond just becoming farmers.

Ideas for what we want to have on this farm are as follows-

An organic farm that provides for the residents of the farm and enough food output to be self-sustaining.

A foster home for kids that provides more permenent circumstances. In other words, the could live there until they grow up or until they are adopted/returned to their family.

An artist residency. A quiet place for artists from the big city to come experience living off of what is in the ground and participating in quiet solitude/work.

A summer program connected to urban community organizations to provide poor kids from inner-city dwellings with a different world view/perspective of what is possible for them.

Land grants given to nearby univeristies to experiment with different forms of alternative farming.

I will go into further detail about all of these possibilities and will be posting research and new ideas as I go along. The plan is to have acquired a farm and started on at least one of these projects in the next three years.

I look forward to seeing where this goes. Here are some thoughts i have. It is a very exciting idea which will take a lot of preparation and perseverance to establish. It seems like you will be providing a lot of services, the main challenge I think will be making it financially sustainable while satisfying all the diverse visions of the people involved. Will it be a non-profit or a for- profit, or a different model altogether? If you have to start small, which activity, foster and youth programs, artist refuge, sustainable farming, or research laboratory do you consider the priority?
